A Belated Update From Tewantin Part Two - Family Matters

While I was camping at Noosa's North Shore in January we had a seines of tropical storms with impressive thunder and lightening and torrential rain.  When I got home and I had time to say hello to Louis properly, this is to have him sit on my lap for a cuddle, I noticed that his left eye was shut and weeping profusely.  My house sitter had already told me that the night before when she was about to walk up to our mutual friend's, Jo, house just up the road Louis had escaped an run off down the road.  She looked for him but he had disappeared.  She phoned Jo and the drove around for a while in the storm worried that Louis was upset by it.  When she came home when she received a phone call fro Jo saying that Louis had turned up at her house and invited himself in for dinner!  Jo walked him home and the dinner party was about and hour late. Note Louis has never been scared by thunder storms and he was just off for a visit.

What we think happened is that Louis had run through the local park and back across the road to Jo's.  On the way he probably ran into a fallen branch of one of the trees in the park it had poked him in the eye which had swollen up over night.   It was Sunday when I noticed it and on Monday it was worse.  The eye was full of blood and I couldn't see the pupil.  I was lucky  to get an early vet appointment and rushed him in.

The vet examined the eye and said that there were small splinters of wood embedded in the eye which would have to be removed under anesthetic.  By chance Louis was due to have his teeth cleaned and checked the next day under anesthetic so they added the eye operation to the visit.  I took him home with antibiotic ointment and painkiller drops.  I took him back next morning for the surgery.  When I picked him up later in the day the vet said that he had been lucky.   The splinters had be removed OK and he still had sight in his eye but I was $1,500.00 lighter in my wallet.  After a week on antibiotics he was back to normal.

Most of March was spent more pleasantly as baby sister, Sue (wont she love that?) and her lovely friend Kirsten used my house as a base for their visit to Queensland.  Most days they were out exploring and took a couple of trips around SE Queensland.  Locally they found Noosa's Aquatic Centre and went swimming on several occasions.  They also visited the lake MacDonald Botanical Gardens and visited its adjacent bird watching hide on several occasions.

Together we went out to dinner at local restaurants on a couple occasions.  We also had dinner at Jo's house but we made sure that Louis stayed home.  One day  we lunch at my friends', Joan and Bill, house.  I have known them since January 1961 when they came out from  the UK.  Bill and I worked for EMI Electronics who had a branch in South Australia.  Joan, Margaret and Sheila, another friend whose husband worked at EMI, used to meet up and walk their babies around Elizabeth in the early 1960s.  Sheila and her husband returned to the UK after their two year contract ended.  Bill and I stayed on and in 1964 we both transferred to the Australian company on a permanent basis.  We had a four week's holiday back in England before making the move permanent.
